The historical way to manage water has been to manage to meet minimum standards. Over time, this leads to communities, businesses and watersheds not meeting goals. Managing water to meet multiple goals and benefits for the long term will improve watersheds, increase quality of life, enhance water resources and meet economic goals. Water has the power and diversity to accomplish all of the above.
This new approach to water has many names such as Integrated Water, One Water, Resiliency and Sustainable Water. The common theme is a full appreciation of how water touches our lives. Balancing and connecting water at every scale, will encourage the enhancement, enjoyment and restoration of our water resources for future generations.
As we realize the full value and potential of water, it exposes new ways to work together. Instead of creating friction over water, there are opportunities for 'win-wins'. Creating a wetland restoration nature park can enhance communities, create value for development, prevent flooding, create habitat, and provide recreation. We can accomplish great things by working together.
